Department of Physics
Brief History:
Department of Physics has been established at the same time when St. Xavier’s college was founded in 1988 AD to run the Intermediate of Science (I. Sc.) program. In Intermediate of Science (I. Sc.) program, Physics is one of the major subjects along with Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics. The Bachelor and Master program in physics was initiated in 2002 and 2007 AD respectively. Physics is an elective paper in B.Sc. CSIT as well which was run in 2007AD. In Master level, department offers four elective papers: Solid State Physics, Biomedical Physics, Plasma Physics and Astrophysics. In addition to this, Physics department facilitates dissertation and project for undergraduate and graduate students. We are also planning to extend researches in collaboration with national and international Universities. The department of physics here, in St. Xavier’s College, has been upgrading its resources and technologies by closely looking into its possible challenges.
Besides curriculum, department of Physics offers various research based activities. The department continues to grow every day in order to underline Physics as an exciting paper; the department has got a team of talented, enthusiastic and highly imaginative faculties. Their tireless commitment to the intellectual growth of the student is praiseworthy.
The department offers following facilities:
- Well-equipped lab
- Separate Research lab
- Class room with Multi media
The department offers following activities:
- Weekly seminar
- Monthly guest lecture
Vision/ Mission
In order to promote research activities in our country, St. Xavier’s College has given priority to the higher study in Physics. In 4-year B.Sc. Physics program, project work is an elective paper in the fourth year. We encourage students to opt for project work against Material Science. In last two years of period, more than 90% students passed selected project work as an elective paper and nearly same percentage of students in M. Sc. Physics program either selected thesis or project work in their academic course. This clearly shows that our department is more focused into the research work along with academic excellence. Our students are encouraged to attend national and international conferences in physics related fields either for oral and poster presentation. The students involved in research are encouraged to publish their work in either national or international journals. Apart from this to maintain the research friendly environment, our department is arranging workshops and conferences in regular basis in our college.
Future Plans:
- To initiate for higher research programs.
- To increase faculties more qualified in research.
- To encourage and support students for different for their research.
- To develop well-equipped research laboratory.
- To upgrade teaching methodology at multimedia based technology.

Conference Details
INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON PHYSICS OF SPACE AND MATERIALS (ICPSM -2017)
September 2-3, 2017
Organized by Department of Physics
St. Xavier’s College
Maitighar, Kathmandu, Nepal
“The International Conference on Physics of Space and Materials” will be held at St. Xavier’s College, Maitighar, Kathmandu, Nepal from September 2-3, 2017.
Introduction:
The Society of Jesus was founded in 1540 by three persons and one of them was St. Francis Xavier. They were called Jesuits. In 1951, on the invitation of the Nepalese government, the Nepal Jesuit Society was established. Fathers Marshall D. Moran, Edward Saton, and Frank Murphy came to Nepal and started St. Xavier’s School at Godawari. After a few years of contribution, the school was expanded to Jawalakhel. The Jesuit Society continued its academic goal in school level. Some schools are established in different parts of Nepal.
With the purpose of supporting education in higher level, the Nepal Jesuits Society established St. Xavier’s College in 1988 at Maitighar. The college is running several academic programs. The college now runs classes at the Higher Secondary and “A” levels, seven Bachelor level programs, and three Master level programs. It has been the center for learning and one of the major choices of the scholars. About three thousand young men and women study in the college.
The Jesuit Society focuses mostly in academics. It also prioritizes altruism and mobilizes the scholars in the field for the same purpose. The college believes not only on theoretical knowledge but also on practical knowledge and therefore, students are sent in the field work so that they could learn something practically. It has added a beauty in the field of learning. St. Xavier’s College puts forward a specific theme for the academic year; the theme for this year is tradition, a call for innovation.
Introducing Kathmandu:
Kathmandu is the capital city of the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal, the largest Himalayan state in Asia. It is the second largest metropolis in Nepal, with a population of 1.4 million in the city proper, and 5 million in its urban agglomeration across the Kathmandu Valley, which includes the towns of Lalitpur, Kirtipur, Madhyapur Thimi and Bhaktapur. Kathmandu is also the largest metropolis in the Himalayan hill region. The city stands at an elevation of approximately 1,400 meters (4,600 feet) above sea level in the bowl-shaped. Kathmandu has been the center of Nepal’s history, art, culture and economy. It has a multiethnic population within a Hindu and Buddhist majority. Religious and cultural festivities form a major part of the lives of people residing in Kathmandu.
Tourism is an important part of the economy as the city is the gateway to the Nepalese Himalayas. In 2013, Kathmandu was ranked third among the top ten upcoming travel destinations in the world by Trip Advisor, and ranked first in Asia. Nepali is the most spoken language in the city, while English is understood by the city’s educated residents.
Weather condition in September:
September marks the end of the monsoons in Nepal. However, it still rains quite a lot in September. It generally rains around 168 mm (about 6 inches). There is a possibility of rain for about 12 days throughout the month. The average daily temperatures are around 230C (73°F), reaching up to 26°C (79°F).
